The Art of Gourd Banjo Making Workshops
This hands on course offers students a thorough and highly cohesive introduction to historical surveys of the banjo, instrument design, creative woodworking processes, material culture, and an in-depth overview of the tools and processes. No previous experience is required in either music or woodworking. This workshop caters to professional luthiers as well as to those who are new to instrument making and woodworking. All materials and tools are provided. Each student designs and creates their own gourd instruments through the guidance of group demos that extensively demonstrate each process, one on one support and class discussions.
Join us at JAarts for our next banjo making workshops. Registration is limited to 8 students per class. Tuition is $1000usd which is inclusive of materials and all of the tools and support to create your own gourd instrument. A $500 non refundable deposit is required to secure your enrollment.
We just concluded our first workshop and it was beyond heartwarming to be able to offer the course and receive such an immensely warm embrace. Each student created a unique instrument that was sculpted with great care and emphasis of form and function and the balance of symmetry/asymmetry. Many life long connections were made as we united and formed a banjo making family.
Registration is officially open for our next two gourd banjo making workshops. The upcoming workshops dates are: June 30th - July 5th, 2025 and October 6th - 11th, 2025
